#49 - Mono Lake Trail Loop (South Tufa Area)

06-06-2021

Mono County, California

Mono Lake is a popular tourist destination near Lee Vining known for its towering, fragile tufas. There are lots of fun facts about Mono Lake that I'll leave to the signage in my pictures below but long story short, calcium-rich springs flow through the bottom of the lake where calcium bonds to carbonates in the lake water. This combination forms limestone in the form of calcium carbonate and gradually builds on top of itself over time. The lake levels have sadly been decreasing over time (which also exposes the tufas) and efforts are currently being made to replenish it. Don't plan on a day out swimming here! Not only is it not allowed, but it'll surely ruin your day.
