Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest, California
Living in the Bay Area for a year, I was feeling homesick and sorely missing the forests and alpine terrain. I started searching for high elevation hikes I could do as a day trip that was only a few hours away. The crisp mountain air and the scent of the mountain pines were what I was craving. Leavitt Peak immediately caught my attention with a casual couloir leading to a false summit near its ridgeline; a perfect half-day of fun in the snow! Most of the route follows the Pacific Crest Trail before a turn-off takes you directly to the peak. Though the snow was knee-deep in some spots, it was compact enough to hike without snowshoes. I didn't plan on summitting that day, so I'll be back to finish it next time.
