#46 - Five Open Books Approach - First Tier (Yosemite National Park)

08-23-2020

Yosemite Valley, Yosemite National Park, California

Five Open Books is a beautiful section of granite located in the Yosemite Valley and consists of many popular Yosemite multi-pitch climbs. The area is divided into a first tier (this post) and a second, upper tier that is accessed by climbing any climbs in the first tier. I realized there isn't much documentation on approaches to many climbs here so I thought this would serve for that purpose. The trail starts at the Lower Yosemite Falls Trailhead and forks left onto a climbers trail leading to the wall. Some uneasy 3rd class climbing is required to get to the base of the first tier climbs starting with Munginella (which we climbed that day!).

Distance: Less than 0.50 miles.

Elevation Gain: ~200 ft.

Final Elevation: ~4280 ft.

Directions to the Parking Lot and Trailhead: Use the following coordinates in Google Maps to route your directions to the Yosemite Lodge Parking Lot. Cross the street (Northside Dr.) where you'll find Lower Yosemite Falls Trailhead.

This hike is located in Yosemite National Park so an entrance fee is required.

Here's a map of the approach and descent trail for the First Tier of Five Open Books.

Start of the 3rd class.

Here's a shot looking behind us into the valley. Bummed there was a fire close by that ruined an otherwise perfect day.

Made it! Looking up Munginella.

#46.

Bonus: Picture of our descent route after climbing Munginella.
