#38 - Horse Creek Trail (Sawtooth Ridge Area)

12-23-2019

Bridgeport, California

Horse Creek Trail is an easy hike with a gradual elevation gain perfect for snowshoeing. I took a two week trip through Bishop and Bridgeport in hopes of climbing Matterhorn Peak via its East Couloir but was turned around by 40+ mph winds at camp and forecasted 100 mph winds at the summit. Despite my minor disappointment at not being able to summit, I was still rewarded with beautiful views of Sawtooth Ridge and the Upper Twin Lake. I will be back!

Distance: 4.4 miles (Out-and-Back)

Elevation Gain: 1,230 ft.

Final Elevation: N/A

Direction to the Parking Lot and Trailhead: Use the following coordinates in Google Maps to route your directions to the parking lot. Parking at the Mono Village Resort costs $15. The resort was closed when I was there so I parked along the trees on Twin Lakes Rd.

Entrance and parking along Twin Lakes Road.

Walking through the Mono Village Resort to the trailhead.

Feeling good!

Continuing on...

Entering Hoover Wilderness.

Made it to the lake! Frozen solid.

Curved trees are evidence of previous avalanches.

The first view of Sawtooth Ridge and Matterhorn Peak.
Backtracked a few miles and set up camp. Snow walls saved our tent from the 40+ mph winds at night.

#38. Burrrr.
