#18 - Hoegees Campground via Lower Winter Creek Trail

01-12-2016

Sierra Madre, California

Another late entry... Better late than never. Hoegees Campground is a perfect beginner's backpacking trail with 14 first come, first serve campsites. It's relatively short and leads to a campground with fire pits and running water from a nearby river (which you must treat). While I haven't ran into a bear here myself, there are many reports of others waking up to bears rummaging through their food at night. So pack and store your food properly. Trail has relatively low elevation gain and is pretty well maintained. Start by following the fire road (Gabrielino National Recreational Trail) where you'll cross a pedestrian bridge. Keep left and follow the signs pointing to Hoegees Campground. Once you arrive at Hoegees Campground, you can either turn around and follow the trail you came in from or continue past the campground to the Upper Winter Creek Trail where it'll loop you back to the parking lot. Distance is roughly under 5 miles if you choose to do the loop. Not sure why the pictures came out so bad this time. Might have to redo this one later.

Distance: 4.4 miles (Out-and-Back)
