#13 - The Narrows (Zion National Park)

06/28/2015

Springdale, Utah

Before I start.... New camera!! Woohoo!

Graduated this spring and was off for a desperately needed climbing vacation. I dropped by Zion National Park again and then dirt-bagged through Colorado for a week. We camped at Snow Canyon State Park in St. George and was limited in activities we could do due to the high temperatures. We decided to stop by The Narrows since we knew it was mostly shaded in cool, shallow water. We ended up saving the climbing for midnight.

The Narrows is a popular, often crowded hike through shallow water. The start of the hike can be accessed through the Temple of Sinawava bus stop using Zion National Park's free shuttle service. Because of the length of the hike, most visitors hike out and back which is just enough for the Zion experience. If you hike the "Bottom Up Hike" from the Temple of Sinawava, no permit is required. However, if you hike the "Top Down Hike" from Chamberlain's Ranch, a permit is required. You can read more about it here.

Distance: No formal distance. (If you take the Chamberlain Ranch route, it is 16 miles... otherwise you choose your own distance from the Temple of Sinawava. Just don't hike past Orderville Canyon because it is prohibited.)

Elevation Gain: It was pretty flat for the distance we went.

Directions to the Start of The Narrows Trail: Take the free Zion National Park shuttle service and get off on the Temple of Sinawava stop. Hike 1 mile through a paved trail called the Riverside Walk where you'll reach the Gateway to The Narrows.

Taking the free shuttle.

Start of the Riverside Walk. Breathtaking surroundings...

Continuing on the 1 mile hike...

Almost there!

Made it to the start of The Narrows!

Continuing on... You get knee deep here.

Favorite picture of the day.

#13!

Final Thoughts
Bring lots of water! Zion has filling stations at almost every stop. Refreshing water with no weird taste. Really fun hike for the whole family.

Chris's Difficulty Scale - 2/10
